Top 10 Things to do in Port Stephens this Winter

While Port Stephens is better known for our beautiful blue waters, beaches and summer holidays, it’s a region brimming with activities making it an ideal winter getaway destination as well. Sunbaking might not be on the agenda but there’s so much to do and see we struggled narrowing it down to our top ten so pack the car, head out of the city and enjoy a fun-filled weekend away!


Camel Ride

An amazing experience and brilliant photo opportunity take a camel ride of Birubi Beach through the sand dunes and down the beach. Oakfield Ranch Camel Rides operate from the lower carpark at Birubi Beach and standard tours run on weekends and during the NSW School Holidays from 10am - 4pm. Or for the best photo opps we recommend a sunset camel tours available on request.

Oakvale Farm & Fauna World

Just a 20 minute drive from Oaks Pacific Blue Resort towards the airport, Oakvale Farm is loved by kids of all sizes. You can handfeed a range of baby animals, milk a cow, cuddle a koala, go on a tractor ride or watch one of the shows! Admission is $80 for the family.

Irukandji Shark & Ray Encounters

If you’re feeling a little more adventurous you can get up close and personal with some wildlife of the underwater kind in the unique interactive aquarium at Irukandji Shark & Ray Encounters located off Marsh Road just a 15 minute drive away and admission is $97 for a family of four. 

Whale Watching

The cooler weather brings these majestic mammals up from the South past Port Stephens. Watching them jump, slap and play is an experience you cannot miss. We recommend Moonshadow cruises who operate the largest and most luxurious cruise in the region.


Murrays Brewery

Just 15 min drive away, Murray’s Brewery promise of no boring beer extends to their beautiful outdoor venue with unique craft beer, amazing wine, bocce, chickens and even entertainment on a weekends. Brewery tours happen daily at 2.15pm or you can enjoy lunch at their onsite restaurant.

Food & Wine Trail

Port Stephens offers great food and wine experiences all within short distance from The Retreat. We suggest visiting the Little Beach Boathouse, Crest Birubi Beach, Nice, Holberts Oysters, and Nelson Bay Fish Market for the best in local seafood selections.

Dinner Cruise

Enjoy a seafood buffet dinner onboard the luxe Moonshadow, followed by a cruise around the bay with onboard entertainment. Sit back relax and enjoy a night out on the water as the stars sparkle overhead, the boat is fully enclosed for warmth. Ask at reception for details on how to book.



Bush Walking

Port Stephens is a haven for avid bush walkers with a variety of breath-taking national parks at your disposal. Tomaree National Park is the closest with a variety of tracks to suit different fitness levels, there’s short walks that even the kids will find easy or longer hikes for the more experienced.  

Quad Biking

Home to the largest moving sand dunes in the Southern Hemisphere, there is no better way to tour this incredible natural wonder than on bikes of the 4 wheel variety, you can also try your hand at sand boarding. Sand Dune Adventures have the biggest bikes, or let someone else drive and ride in a hummer.

Toboggan Hill Park

Toboggan Hill Park is literally just around the corner from Oaks Pacific Blue Resort, just a 3 minute drive or 18 minute walk and is ideal for families of all ages with a huge range of activities and games including hot ice skating!

Go Karting

For the adrenalin junkies, Port Stephens has one of the biggest, fastest and most thrilling 4-stroke go kart hire tracks in the region at Go Karts Go located in Nelson Bay. They also have special Junior Go Karts that can cater for kids as young as 3 so the whole family can enjoy this excursion.
