Stay in the best area in Cairns

Hotel on Cairns Esplanade & CBD

G’Day and welcome to Cairns! Ancient rainforest on one side, the Great Barrier Reef on the other, and somehow, you’ve ended up in the middle of both. This is North Queensland's tropical playground where Mother Nature decided to show off a bit. And it’s just something else.

This destination is basically what happens when paradise gets practical: Easy to get around, hard to leave. You've got UNESCO World Heritage rainforest (that's the Daintree, and yep, it’s amazing), reef adventures that'll have you questioning why you ever packed anything other than swimmers, and a laid-back vibe that makes checking emails feel like a terrible idea.

The Cairns Esplanade is perfect for those morning walks when you're pretending to be healthy on holiday. No judgement if they end at a café over a brekkie.

The markets are great for finding things you didn't know you needed. And the cafés? Well, let's just say you'll be fuelled up for whatever adventure made it onto today’s itinerary. It’s also why many travellers consider the Esplanade one of the best areas to stay in Cairns.

Right in the middle of it all, Oaks Cairns Hotel is our 4-star hotel on the Cairns Esplanade, QLD. So you’re never far from the action, or your next cuppa.

Think modern hotel rooms with panoramic ocean views that make you pause mid-conversation to just stare. After a day out or lounging (a valid holiday activity if you ask), you'll have a proper retreat to come back to. We're proud to be among Cairns' top hotels.

Whatever brings you to this tropical corner of Australia, there’s something to make the trip memorable. Plus, we’ve got hotel deals in Cairns CBD  to help you wander over and see it.

Not a bad corner of the world to accidentally stay longer than planned, really.

FAQs

What is Cairns famous for?

Ask ten Aussies and most of them will say the Great Barrier Reef, and they’re not wrong. Cairns is one of Australia’s gateways to the reef, with snorkelling trips, dive boats and plenty of ways to experience it every day.

But the reef is only a part of the story. Cairns is also known for the Daintree Rainforest, island day trips, the waterfront Esplanade and being one of the best places to experience Tropical North Queensland. And let’s not forget about its brilliant cafés, night markets and all the nearby beaches… It’s a never-ending list, tbh.

What is the weather usually like in Cairns?

Oh, it’s warm. Pretty much all year round. Cairns has a tropical climate, so sunshine, humidity and the occasional shower are all part of the package.

The weather allows you to spend the day outdoors, whether you’re heading to the reef, exploring the rainforest or simply wandering along the Esplanade.

Pack light, bring the sunnies and you’ll fit right in.

What are the best places to visit in Cairns?

Most itineraries start with the Great Barrier Reef (fair enough too). But there’s heaps to see, from the Daintree Rainforest and Kuranda Scenic Railway to Fitzroy Island or Port Douglas day trips, local markets and Cairns Aquarium.

The Cairns Esplanade has a habit of ticking a lot of boxes: waterfront walks, cafés, the Lagoon and sunset views included. It’s little wonder it’s one of the best areas to stay in Cairns.

Staying at a hotel on Cairns Esplanade in the CBD area means many of the best attractions in the city, dining spots and tour departures are already within easy reach.

What is there to do in Cairns?

People arrive with a plan, then Cairns usually adds a few more. The Great Barrier Reef is the obvious headline act; you can try a snorkelling or scuba diving tour.

Wander the Cairns Esplanade, cool off in the Lagoon (a huge 4,800 square-metre saltwater swimming pool), explore the Cairns Botanic Gardens or take a day trip to Kuranda, visiting the wildlife parks and enjoying the charming village. And let’s not forget about Daintree Rainforest or Atherton Tablelands.

Swap the city for island vibes. Cairns also makes a great base to explore the beautiful Fitzroy Island, known for snorkelling and beach walks, while Green Island combines coral reefs with family-friendly activities. If not, a day trip to Port Douglas is a great choice too! And don’t skip a  stop at Palm Cove or Trinity Beach on the way, it’s 100% worth it.

What food is Cairns known for?

Our advice: come hungry. Between the reef, the rainforest and the fertile farmland surrounding the city, Cairns has access to some pretty incredible ingredients.

Seafood is a big part of the food scene, with fresh barramundi, prawns and mud crab. But it’s not all about what comes from the ocean. Indigenous bush tucker ingredients like finger lime, lemon myrtle and macadamias feature on menus across the region, alongside uniquely Aussie meats like kangaroo, emu and crocodile.

You can also find tropical fruit such as mangoes, bananas, pineapples and lychees. Sample some of these straight from the growers by visiting Rusty’s Markets (find them open every Friday to Sunday).

Visit the Cairns Night Markets and grab anything from fish and chips, sushi or a late-night kebab.

What are the top annual events in Cairns?

Cairns always has something going on! From sport events to cultural festivals, giving you one more excuse to head north.

One of the main ones is Cairns Indigenous Art Fair (CIAF), an Indigenous art fair, celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art and culture. Then there’s Cairns Festival, a 10-day takeover with live music, art installations and the family-friendly Carnival on Collings in the Botanic Gardens.

Sports fans can catch IRONMAN Cairns, which brings athletes from around the world to Tropical North Queensland. Another local favourite is the Cairns Show, running for more than a century; it’s Australia’s largest regional agricultural show.

Want to be close to the action? Choosing a top hotel near Cairns Esplanade and the CBD makes it easy to get around and soak up the atmosphere.

How to get to Cairns?

Getting to Cairns is so easy. Cairns Airport is one of the busiest regional airports in Australia, with direct flights from major cities including Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, as well as international connections from destinations like Tokyo, Bali and Auckland.

Keen to turn the journey into part of the holiday fun? The famous Spirit of Queensland train links Cairns and Brisbane, offering a more relaxed way to travel. Or, if you’re keen for a road trip, take the scenic drive along the Queensland coast.

How to get around Cairns?

Cairns is a pretty easy city to get around. The Esplanade, marina, restaurants and many of the main attractions are within walking distance of the city centre, making it simple to explore on foot. For further destinations, you can use the local buses, taxis and rideshares readily available. If you’d rather explore at your own pace, hiring a car gives you a bit more flexibility.

Where to stay in Cairns?

For most travellers, staying in a hotel on Cairns Esplanade or the CBD is the way to go. You’ll be close to the waterfront, the marina and city attractions like the Esplanade Lagoon. It’s also handy for reef tours or island day trips, and when you’re done exploring, you can simply wander back along the waterfront.

What type of accommodation does Oaks Hotels offer in Cairns?

We’re a  modern 4-star hotel in Cairns right on the Esplanade, with all the essentials for a comfortable stay  plus a location that does a fair bit of the work for you.

There's also a rooftop restaurant and bar overlooking the water, perfect for a Cairns sunset and a cold drink in hand.
