The best time to visit is from late July to early November, when you can enjoy milder temperatures and whale watching season at its peak. If you want to experience pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds, visit during March or May. To be honest, both options are great soooo it’s up to you. Just think twice about the vibe you’d like to get from this coastal town and choose your fighter.

Take a along the iconic Urangan Pier and admire the bay views at sunset. Nearby, the Esplanade means you’re never far from a café, a quiet stretch of sand or a spot to sit and take it all in.

You could also visit the Hervey Bay Regional Gallery and explore a mix of local and national exhibitions, but if you prefer something slower, the Hervey Bay Botanic Gardens are for you. They offer a peaceful escape, with open green spaces and walking paths.

And if you feel like exploring a little further, K'gari and Lady Elliot Island are both within easy reach, where you’ll find unique natural landscapes and marine life experiences.

If you’re visiting between July and November, whale watching is a must! And one of those activities you’ll never forget, trust us. Humpbacks pass through the bay, offering some of the closest encounters you’ll find anywhere (which also means heaps of chances to take millions of videos).

Out on the water, you can go fishing, kayaking or join a boat tour to spot dolphins and other marine life. Prefer to keep your feet  on dry land? Then take a walk or cycle along the Esplanade, stop for a coffee, or spend a relaxed afternoon by the pier. Wander through the Torquay Beachside Markets or Koala Markets, where you’ll find local crafts and fresh finds.

Travelling with the kids? Visit the WetSide Water Park, a free attraction for the whole family. Or head to the Reefworld Aquarium, an all-natural aquarium fed by ocean water, and get up close to local reef fish, sea turtles, and sharks. Yep, wildlife comes standard here.

If you’re thinking about a day trip, you can’t go past K'gari (Fraser Island).  You can swim in freshwater lakes like Lake McKenzie, cruise along 75 Mile Beach and take in some of the island’s unique landscapes. It’s also home to pure-strain Aussie dingoes, so you might spot one along the way. Just remember to always keep the distance and never (ever) feed them. They’re incredible to see, but need to be treated with respect as they can be really dangerous.

Hervey Bay Seafood Festival is the perfect event to enjoy delicious local seafood, wine and live music. But let’s not forget about the Ocean Festival. It’s an annual celebration of the ocean, with educational activities in the Discovery Pod.

You can also enjoy the regular markets, including the Koala Markets and the Nikenbah Markets along the marina, showcasing local food, crafts and live entertainment.

As the major gateway to the Fraser Coast, you can easily reach Hervey Bay in several ways. Fly into Hervey Bay Airport (HVB) with regular flights from Brisbane and easy connections from other big Aussie cities.

If you prefer to drive, it’s an easy road trip from Brisbane or the Gold Coast to the bay. No car? No worries. Train and coach services also run from Brisbane to nearby stations like Maryborough West, with transfers available to take you directly into town. Easy as ABC!

It’s so walkable and so easy to get around. 

That said, hiring a car will give you total freedom to jump from one place to another along the coastline and the surrounding areas. But if you prefer not to drive, no worries! Taxis, rideshare and local buses have you covered and they connect key areas like the Esplanade.
