Brisbane is a Mecca for ids this Summer
There is no shortage of family fun in Brisbane. From parks and waterfront attractions to the state’s cultural highlights, this summer is sure shaping up to be fun for families!Get cultural
Expose your kids to some of the most cultural and educational venues in Brisbane! These places cater to families with young children with specific activities and interactive programs like the Children’s Art Centre at QAGOMA, The Corner at the State Library and, well, pretty much the whole of the Queensland Museum.
Cool off at the beach
Located in the heart of the city is the unique South Bank precinct which also happens to be aquatic centre of the city and the perfect spot to let the kids run free! Streets Beach at South Bank, along with Aquativity, is great for cooling off during summer and is surrounded by plenty of parklands and activities plus lots of great spots for lunch or a treat of the gelato variety.
Picnic in the park
You can’t really say you’ve visited Brisbane until you’ve visited one of the gorgeously green parks around the city. Roma Street Parklands is our favourite within easy walking distance from Queen St Mall and best of all entry is free! It is full of gardens, wildlife and playgrounds for all ages. Pack a picnic lunch from home, or purchase from the licensed Café overlooking the Water Wall and relax while the kids explore.
Go sci-fi
The Science centre has some incredible displays that will wow both the big and little kids in us all! The hands-on, fully immersive activities educate on the science behind our day to day activities and the kids will spend hours learning about the human body, energy, light, sound, air, water and earth. Although best suited for 8 and older but plenty to see all the same and is open daily from 9.30am.
Cruise the river
Possibly one of the most unique ways to see the city is to hop on and hop off one of Brisbane’s public transport water vessels. Oaks Felix is super close to the ferry terminals but whether it’s a CityCat, a CityFerry or the CityHopper you can start at any one of the 25 ferry terminals that dot the Brisbane riverbank and jump on and off to your heart’s content.
Celebrate the silly season
For the ultimate summer family escape, take the kids to the annual City Hall Lights Spectacular from 9-24 December, watch all the Christmas entertainment in Queen St Mall, see the iconic David Jones window displays, or catch the Christmas Fireworks Spectacular from 20-23 December at South Bank Parklands.
Catch a game
There’s plethora of choice when it comes to big summer sporting events at this time of the year. What is summer in Australia without cheering on our sporting heroes to glory? A family day out at a sporting event is always for example, the national Big Bash League competition. The kids will love drama of the match in real time and the Big Bash League are kid-friendly and only 3 hours long. Jam-packed with action both on and off the field and the kids will be on the edge of their seats till the very last ball. This competition has a national summer fixture with 3 matches taking place at The Gabba opposite the new Oaks Woolloongabba hotel.
