Romantic atmosphere in New Zealand
One of the great things about planning a romantic weekend in NZ is that a lot of the work is done for you. The landscapes do a lot of the heavy lifting, with lakes, beaches and endless hills creating the perfect backdrop for your escape (and for your next screensaver).
As no two couples are the same, you can find the perfect balance in Aotearoa. If you’re both outdoorsy types, you can do a lot of hiking and exploring and then indulge in some incredible food and wine in the evening. This mix makes couples’ trips extra special, which is why NZ draws visitors from all over the world.
Plan your romantic getaway
Couples getaways to New Zealand really are something else. And we reckon, with a bit of inspiration from us, and some careful planning of your own, you can build the perfect trip itinerary.
1. Queenstown
We’re starting strong with Queenstown. You’ve got breathtaking lake views, mountains and plenty of space to sit back and relax, but there’s also enough going on if you want to fill your days.
If you’re looking for romantic things to do in Queenstown, then we reckon a helicopter flight to Milford Sound is hard to top. You’ll get views the whole way and then you can follow it up with a boat cruise through waterfalls and fjords. And if you’ve been thinking about popping the big question on this trip, this is the place to make it happen!
If you’d prefer something more low-key, a day trip to Glenorchy is always a good idea. It takes around 45 minutes by car, with plenty of spots along the way to pull over and take in Lake Wakatipu from different angles.
Wine lovers will want to head to Gibbston Valley, which is a 20-minute drive from town. It’s one of Queenstown’s most famous wine regions, so an afternoon tasting (and giggling) could be a must for your trip.
If you’re wondering where to stay, Oaks Queenstown Shores Resort makes things a bit easier. You’ll be able to take in some gorgeous panoramic lake views while you enjoy all of the perks of our serviced apartments. There’s even spa baths and fireplaces, so it’s the kind of place where you don’t have to try too hard to set the mood (and yes, you’ll have to make an extra effort to leave the room).
2. Abel Tasman National Park
Outdoorsy couples will love Abel Tasman National Park, which has a completely different feel to other NZ locations. Think golden beaches, clear blue water, and walking tracks that are so peaceful and quiet, you might not even come across anyone else.
There’s a lot of different routes, so beginners and expert walkers can all find their feet. Water sports are also really popular here, from kayaking to day sailing. If you want to be active on your couples getaway in New Zealand, water sports are one way to indulge.
If you want to stay at the park for longer, you can stay overnight at DOC campsites and experience the best of it day and night. Some couples turn it into a multi-day trip, taking up to four days to see as much as possible. And let us say it’s never gonna be enough! Abel Tasman National Park is one of those places that you can stay a few days or visit multiple times and still want more.
3. Auckland
Auckland is New Zealand’s biggest city, and it strikes a good balance between city energy and relaxation.
If you want a relaxed daytime plan, you could enjoy a coastal walk from Takapuna through to Hobsonville Point. You can always enjoy coffee with a view along the way. This might be a simple date idea, but it can be more memorable and special than something that’s been overly planned.
The city has some excellent links to nearby spots, and you can jump on a ferry to Waiheke Island or head out to the Coromandel Peninsula to see some beautiful sights. Waiheke is the easier option as there are more frequent ferries, but Coromandel feels a bit more off grid if you don’t want to follow the crowds.
If you’re after something a bit different, a horse ride along Muriwai Beach at sunset is one of those moments that feels really special, even if you’ve never ridden a horse before.
While you’re in Auckland you can stay at Oaks Auckland Hotel, which is a great base. You’ll be close to the waterfront, Commercial Bay and Spark Arena, so everything you could possibly need is nearby. 5 stars to the prime location and to the hotel restaurant, DASH. It’s freshly made food, selected from a menu with all the classics on it. Sounds yummy, right?
Auckland Harbour Suites and Avani Metropolis Residences are top choices as well. Both locations are unbeatable. You’ll feel at home thanks to their facilities, plus you’ll get to enjoy amazing city views (yep, those are the ones you’ll be dreaming of once you’re back at home)
4. Bay of Islands
About three hours north of Auckland, you can head to the Bay of Islands and slow things right down.
There’s a whopping 144 islands scattered across the area, so it’s worth taking your time and exploring them by car or on the water. A lot of people rent a campervan to add a little more to the experience. You’ll find loads to do, including snorkelling and kayaking, or you can book some activities to enjoy together.
One of the things you HAVE to do is the Rainbow Falls walk, which is short, but worth it for the views. Taking The Hole in the Rock cruise is another highlight, and a good opportunity for some dolphin watching. And for something a little different, the Kawiti glowworm caves give you a look at another one of New Zealand’s unique natural features.
5. Wellington
Next up is Wellington, which has a slightly different energy, and it works well for a city-based romantic getaway in New Zealand.
One of the biggest reasons why is the food scene, with plenty of spots for a casual dinner or something a bit more special. Places like Jano Bistro and Rita are popular choices if you’re looking for a really special date night.
During daytime, you can go on the Mount Victoria walk and it gives you a great view over the city, and it’s not too difficult to do if you’d prefer not to overexert yourself!
If you want an alternative date idea, go to the Wellington Chocolate Factory and do a chocolate-making workshop. It’s a lot of fun, and you get to keep the bars at the end.
Stay overnight at the Oaks Wellington Hotel, which keeps you close to the action, but gives you a wonderful place to escape for those quieter moments. The hotel has comfortable rooms and impeccable facilities, so you can enjoy some quality time together. The central location can make a big difference when it comes to getting around.
6. Cook Islands
A stay at the Cook Islands is a fantastic way to extend your trip. They’re beautiful and offer complete relaxation, perfect for a romantic weekend in NZ. You can spend your days island hopping, taking jeep tours, or just chilling by the water. They have a bit of a honeymoon feel, so they’re a must for couples celebrating their wedding, anniversary or other special occasion.
To wrap it up!
With so many things to see and do, planning a romantic getaway in New Zealand is less about packing it all in, and more about choosing a few places where you can just slow down and enjoy quality time together.
From short weekend visits to longer trips, the mix of landscapes, experiences and quieter moments gives you everything you need to enjoy a special trip.
