Easter in Australia

Aussies really embrace the Easter long weekend, making it one of the busiest travel periods of the year, and a great time for visitors to soak up the holiday vibe. While the dates shift from year to year, Australia observes Good Friday, Easter Saturday, Sunday and Monday as public holidays, allowing most people a beautiful four-day weekend. While Easter and many of its traditions are rooted in Christianity, the holiday is widely embraced as a cultural occasion, regardless of religious beliefs.

Traditions and Activities

Easter holidays in Australia are traditionally a time for families and gatherings, built around a few classic traditions, acknowledging that food, of course, plays a starring role. Easter eggs in Australia are the main event for kids, who head to bed on Saturday night hoping to wake up to a visit from the Easter Bunny. Lots of families and communities set up Easter egg hunts, hiding treats around gardens or parks and sending children off to search for them (great fun for both adults and kids!).

As a uniquely Aussie alternative to the Easter bunny, there’s also the Easter Bilby, created to raise awareness of native wildlife, as rabbits aren’t native to Australia.

Hot Cross buns are another much-loved Easter treat. They’re soft, sweet, spiced buns marked with a cross and perfectly toasted with lots of butter. And many families also get together for a classic roast lamb dinner with different sides, the perfect way to celebrate the family coming together over the holidays.

One of the best Easter escapes in Australia would definitely be the Hunter Region, thanks to its exceptional wine and foodie scene, its beautiful landscapes with a mix of green, yellow and hints of red in the trees and the seasonal events for families and couples.

And if you’re planning to visit, you can’t miss Oaks Cypress Lakes Resort, an alpine resort with spa, golf course and everything you could possibly need for a 10 out of 10 getaway.

Nested amongst stunning vineyards and rolling hills, guests can get away from it all in a bushland family villa or luxury suite looking over the hinterland of the estate. With a 300-acre golf course, country club, restaurants, bars, pools and tennis courts on site, the resort truly has something for everyone. Elysia Day Spa is just a five-minute walk away, while the wider Hunter Valley has countless incredible experiences to offer, from wine and cheese tasting to hot air balloon rides and so much more. This is Easter at its best.

If you’re looking to spend the Easter holidays in Australia immersed in the heart of nature and relaxing somewhere truly special, Oaks Casuarina Santai Resort on the Tweed Coast is a touch of Balinese paradise. Just a five-minute stroll from the golden sands of Casuarina Beach and very close to Kingscliff, the resort is perfect for a romantic getaway. Guests can relax beside inviting, palm-fringed lagoon pools with shady cabanas and enjoy a range of dining options. The resort’s coastal location makes it ideal for an Easter day trip to Byron Bay or the stunning Gold Coast, both around 30 minutes drive away from the Resort facilities.

For an accommodation with more of a family vibe, Oaks Sunshine Coast Oasis Resort is ideal. Kids will love the on-site waterpark, along with the Kangaroo Jumper, climbing frames, sandpits...Meanwhile, there’s plenty to keep the adults happy too, with a stunning resort pool to relax by, cocktail in hand, while enjoying one of the excellent dining options.

Tucked away in the stunning Snowy Mountains, Oaks Lake Crackenback Resort is an Easter destination for both kids and adults. Choose from lakeside apartments or mountain chalets with gorgeous alpine views and enjoy complimentary access to a whole range of incredible activities, including golf, canoeing, archery, tennis and scenic walking trails (exactly, there’s no way you’ll get bored). The Spa and Wellness Centre comes highly recommended, while the Health Centre features a gym, sauna and indoor heated pool, perfect for warming up on those crisp mountain days.

If you fancy a City Plan for your Easter break in Australia, Oaks Melbourne Flemington Suites is a great option on the fringe of the CBD. Just a short walk from Melbourne Zoo and super close to Flemington Racecourse, these 1 and 2 bedroom apartments put you right where the action is for your getaway. And speaking of Easter plans, The legendary Melbourne Easter Show, Australia’s biggest annual festival, is guaranteed fun for the whole family. A celebration of Australia’s rural culture, the show is a fantastic mix of agricultural events, live entertainment, tons of food and so much more.

And last but not least, don’t forget about Sydney if you're hoping for a city break. Then Oaks Sydney Castlereagh Suites will be the perfect place for you. Close to all the Sydney downtown action, the apartments boast their own kitchen facilities, and the hotel has a gym, swimming pool and WiFi inclusive. And, just like in Melbourne, you can also head to the Sydney Royal Easter Show for a fun and different plan to enjoy with family, friends or your date.

FAQs

Is Easter a good time to visit Australia?

Easter is a great time to visit Australia! With the chill autumn weather, the long public holiday and buzzing atmosphere, it’s the perfect time for an Aussie holiday. And with fun plans like the Melbourne Easter Show, there's even more reasons to visit then.

Do I need to book my Easter holidays in advance?

As Easter is such a popular time to get away, it’s always a good idea to book things early so you don’t miss out. It’s a peak time for travelling around the country, so accommodation and transport options tend to fill up quickly and can become more expensive. Early planning is always a good idea!

Are shops open at Easter?

Such a good question, but it depends on where you are staying.

In Australia, Good Friday most shops are closed nationwide, but on Easter Saturday, Sunday and Monday major supermarkets and department stores reopen. Just to be safe, once you know where you’re heading, have a quick look at the state/territory rules so you know what to expect.

It’s also a good idea to check restaurants and bars opening hours before you go, as many of them have restrictions over the Easter long-weekend.

When is the next public holiday after Easter?

That would be Anzac Day on April 25th, but not all the states have a public holiday on that specific day, especially if it falls on Saturday or Sunday. After that you pretty much have to skip the rest of the year until Christmas, as Labour Day is celebrated in different months depending on the state or the territory, but it's usually in May or October.
