Reinvent your Couples Escape or Honeymoon with a road trip

What could be more romantic than hitting the road with your loved one for a Western Australia honeymoon? Take it at your own pace, linger where you like, concentrate on each other, and the beauty of your surroundings. Sounds amazing, doesn’t it? A couples road trip is a great idea, giving you tonnes of freedom and flexibility, without the constraints that come with staying in the same place. Road trips allow you to get off the beaten track, connect with locals, glimpse things you wouldn’t see in the guidebooks and generally enjoy a deeper travel experience. And what better way to have some serious quality time with your other half? Priceless!

Wander & Wonder: from Perth to Broome

The Perth to Broome road trip is legendary, and the perfect choice for a romantic adventure in WA for two. Most travellers give themselves 7-14 days so that they can really soak up the journey, covering around 2,200 stunning kilometres.

The Oaks Perth Hotel is a great place to stay as you begin your journey north, with its super convenient location, right in the centre of Perth, only 12km from Perth Airport. Murray Street Mall is just down a short walk away, with plenty of shops and eateries, as is the train station. There’s also a great restaurant and bar in the hotel itself. Perth, with its cosmopolitan vibes, is a great place to start the journey before heading off up the coast.

Heading north from Perth, you can follow the stunning Indian Ocean Drive, where the stars come out at night and the ocean is with you all the way. Stop off at coastal towns like Cervantes, about 2 hours north of Perth, or Geraldton, a bit further up and famous for its wind sports and fabulous seafood. Then keep going until you get to Kalbarri National Park, the intersection of the outback and the coastal road, and famous for its breathtaking gorges and river views.

As you head up the coast, you might catch a glimpse of dolphins in the crystal waters of Shark Bay and Monkey Mia, before the landscape becomes more remote, with the red earth and huge skies of the arid Pilbara region. Next, you’re on to the unmissable Karijini National Park, with its deep gorges, waterfalls and natural swimming holes.

After that it’s Port Hedland, where you'll drive through wide open country before hitting Broome, with its palm trees and white sands. After a few days camping and staying on the roads, you’ll be more than happy to spend a couple of nights at the Oaks Broome Hotel. In the heart of beautiful Roebuck Bay, is the ideal base for enjoying this piece of paradise. With on-site dining, apartments with luxurious spa-style baths and two pools to lounge by, you can relax and recharge here before heading out to explore the beauty beyond.

A fabulous way to finish off your Western Australian honeymoon or romantic escape is by marvelling as the sky turns pink as the sun sets at Cable Beach (camel tour included). Oaks Cable Beach Resort, just minutes away from the beach itself, is an incredible retreat to celebrate the end of your romantic getaway in Western Australia. With 5 swimming pools, including an infinity pool, on-site dining and a choice of spacious studios or apartments to stay at, this is an incredible place to really feel those romantic, honeymoon vibes and Kimberley sunset.

Essential Tips to plan the perfect romantic road trip

To make sure your honeymoon road trip goes without a hitch (no pun intended!) rent your car with time, in that way you’ll make sure you get the one that will fit your needs. Once you have the car sorted, it’s time to book your Oaks Hotel accommodation and don’t forget that our team is always happy to help you if you have any doubts.

Having a plan B is always useful. A lot can happen while driving, so try to look on the bright side and just focus on enjoying your romantic getaway on Western Australia while you plan an alternative.

Things to pack

As driving is going to be a BIG part of the road trip, make sure you have your driving licence and roadside assistance details. Pack an extra phone charger and off-line maps, just in case. You'll be driving through some extremely remote areas, so make sure you have plenty of water, at least 5-10 litres per person for the long stretches, and more than enough fuel. Take a spare tyre and a jack, a tyre pressure gauge and extra washer fluid. Pack some non-perishable snacks and some rubbish bags too, so that you don’t leave anything behind.

When it comes to choosing a suitable vehicle, it’s important to remember that there could be some tricky off-road driving conditions, so a 4x4 is probably best, especially if you’re heading inland to see places like the Kalbarri National Park. A motorhome or campervan is also a good choice, so you can park up and sleep wherever you want. And with the great choice of Oaks Hotels at either end of the road trip, a mix of the two could be a great idea, with a restful stay in a hotel after a long drive.

To wrap it up!

A romantic getaway in Western Australia is the perfect idea for a truly unforgettable honeymoon experience. Driving up the coast from Perth to Broome is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to take in the breathtaking beauty of the western coastline, discover the lesser visited parts of Australia and revel in some of nature’s most stunning landscapes. Start the trip with an urban stay in Oaks Perth Hotel, to see the best of the city, and finish at one of the Oaks options around beautiful Broome. What a romantic escape!
