Oaks Ibn Battuta Gate Dubai
We stayed here for three nights and had an amazing stay!
Tens of millions of people will be amazed by exhibits from almost 200 nations at Expo 2020 Dubai. Here's what you need to know.
What is Expo?
The World Expo is a showcase for human achievements and advancements from around the globe. A place to celebrate and exhibit the latest developments and new technologies brought about by humanity’s constant enterprise. The concept of a Global Exhibition, or World Fair, was first realised in 1951 with London’s ‘Great Exhibition’. An event attended by such luminaries as the father of evolution, Charles Darwin, and pioneer of electromagnetism, Michael Faraday.
Now officially licenced once every five years, each Expo is built around predefined themes, with all nations on earth invited to demonstrate their latest and most exciting advances in those areas.
Previous Expos have seen the world’s first public viewings of such life-changing developments as the mechanical computer (London, 1862), the telephone (Philadelphia, 1876), the phonograph (Paris, 1878), the Ferris wheel (Chicago, 1893), the zipper (Chicago, 1893), the X-ray machine (Buffalo, 1901), the ice cream cone (St. Louis, 1904), the hot dog (St. Louis, 1904), the baby incubator (Seattle, 1909), the television (New York, 1939), and the mobile phone (Osaka, 1970). The Paris skyline is still dominated by the Eiffel Tower, one of the most visited tourist attractions in the world, which was initially built for the 1889 Expo, and in St. Louis, 1904, Thomas Edison oversaw the presentation to the public of electricity itself!
Now, in 2021, Expo comes to Dubai. Just imagine what the world can discover…
Expo 2020 Dubai – A New Frontier
Throughout 170 years of World Expos, the fairs have been held almost exclusively in Europe and North America, with a few more recent events finding home in eastern nations such as Japan, China, and South Korea. Expo 2020 sees the celebration hosted for the first time anywhere in the Middle East, Africa, or South Asia, and the chosen location is the United Arab Emirates.
For six months, Dubai will welcome every nation of the planet to the largest event ever held in the Arab world. The theme of Expo 2020 is ‘Connecting Minds and Creating the Future’, with specific focus on the three areas of Opportunity, Mobility, and Sustainability. Expo 2020 is about bringing people together in one place, to collaborate, to create, and to change the world.
Expo 2020 will be just as much about play as about work. A huge 4km2 district of the city will be developed featuring the three thematic districts,192 national pavilions, over 200 restaurants, and host a staggering 60 live shows every single day. At night the arena will come alive with big-name concerts and mesmerising pyrotechnic displays. All this in an awe-inspiring environment of world-class architecture and innovative landscapes.
When is Expo 2020?
Originally intended to begin in 2020, in the interest of safety and responsibility as the world strives to overcome the Covid-19 pandemic, Expo 2020 has been moved to new dates in 2021. The event will now run from 1 October 2021 to 31 March 2022. The site will be open seven days a week, from 10.00 am to 12.00 midnight on weekdays and 10.00 am to 2.00 am on weekends.
